New Baby Must Haves
Look online or go to a baby store, and you may think you have to spend thousands of dollars on equipment for your newborn. The truth is, there are only a few new baby must haves that you need before you bring your precious bundle home. Our Plano pediatricians have advice and helpful tips to help you prepare for your new baby and provide excellent newborn care.
A safe car seat is an absolutely essential piece of baby equipment
One of the most important new baby must haves is a safe car seat. Babies ride in rear-facing seats until they are big enough to face forward. You can purchase an infant-only seat that your baby can use until he or she weighs about 35 pounds, or a convertible car seat for longer-term use. Make sure you understand how to install and use the seat properly before you put your baby in the car.
A safe sleep environment is a vital part of newborn care
You need a crib that meets current safety standards, so older models will not work. You need at least two fitted crib sheets and a waterproof mattress cover. You don’t need, nor should you ever use, pillows, quilts, blankets, top sheets or other soft items in the crib with your baby. Talk to our Plano pediatricians about creating a safe sleep environment for your baby.
Diapering supplies are new baby must haves
One thing we know about babies: They go through a lot of diapers. Here are the things you absolutely need for this critical part of newborn care.
- A large supply of diapers
- A diaper pail that latches securely
- Diaper rash cream
- Gentle baby wipes
You don’t have to have a changing table. You can use a changing pad on a secure surface.
Clothes for newborn babies are all about comfort, ease and safety
There are so many cute options when it comes to newborn apparel, but which items are really new baby must haves? The most important thing is that the clothing is comfortable, safe for sleeping and playing, and easy to take on and off.
- Gowns or one-piece sleepers
- Sleep sacks to keep babies warm
- Infant t-shirts or onesies
- Socks or booties
- Knit caps
- Mittens to keep baby from scratching his or her face and body
