Why newborn checkups are important
Our Plano pediatricians are parents, so they know that new parenthood can be the most sleep-deprived time of a person’s life. Nevertheless, we encourage all parents to bring their babies in for newborn checkups. These checkups are important because they help us ensure that babies are growing and developing normally, and that parents have the tools to help their babies stay on the path to a healthy first year.
What to expect at newborn checkups
Our Plano pediatricians strive to make newborn checkups a helpful experience for parents and babies. At your newborn’s visits, you can expect the following.
- Lots of measurements. Our providers will weigh your baby, as well as measure height and head circumference to make sure your baby is gaining weight and growing properly.
- Lots of questions. Our pediatricians will ask questions to ensure that your baby is safe and receiving proper support at home, and that you are too. You may be asked to keep track of your child’s feeding schedule and bowel movements to answer these questions.
- Lots of shots. Nobody enjoys seeing a baby cry, but the vaccinations your baby receives during newborn checkups can keep your child safe from deadly diseases.
- Lots of advice. We’re ready to put our experience to work for you. From tips about sleeping to starting solid foods, we can help you navigate the big and small changes in your child’s first year.
The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends that children receive seven checkups in their first year of life. Make the most out of your child’s newborn visits. Keep a running list of questions or concerns to help you remember them when you’re in the office.
